What is the best way to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall?

As a cute and comfortable as the velour track suite is, we are happy that the trend has passed. A pair of comfortable Cole Haan loafers is a sophisticated and practical choice when trekking through airports and on and off airplanes. Working your way up, jeans are appropriate with a couple of different layers on top for the change in temperature and elevation. Top it off with a Nordstroms cashmere wrap or tote a blanket in your essential large carryall for those dreaded redeye flights.

The bowtie is one of my favorite accessories for men. Not only is this a smart and charismatic choice, but it provides your outfit with a touch of vintage style (giving homage to our grandfathers). Opt for a Brooks Brothers striped bowtie with a splash of color to give that extra punch to your overall look. From the classroom to the boardroom to a wedding reception dance floor, the bowtie is the perfect piece to shake things ups.

This is a tough task for so many of us out there. I know that when the first signs of fall appear I have to restrain myself from breaking out my winter fur and suede boots. What is the atmosphere like in your studio? My husband and I converted our one car garage into a fully functioning screen printing studio. There are a lot of work surfaces and equipment in a tiny room, so I'd say it's cozy - but I find it quite pleasant. San Diego is beautiful almost every single day - so I can open up the garage door and get tons of natural light and fresh air. You have to walk outside and cross the patio to get into the studio- so it feels like a separate space.What inspires you? I get much of my inspiration from other illustrators - especially kid's book illustrators. Recently I've discovered the illustrations of Vladimir Bobri - two books he illustrated that really struck me were Sleepy Book by Charlotte Zolotow and Icebergs by Roma Gans. In addition, I'm always into interesting furniture, white wooden floors, the ocean, turquoise, Balboa Park, and my family. What's your work schedule: 9-5 day or only when you are inspired? I have a 1.5 year old daughter - Penelope - so my actual work hours are very sporadic. I manage to get a fair amount accomplished during her nap time, but sometimes that's just laundry and emailing. I'd say from the hours of 7 pm to 10 pm are my most productiveHow do you combat creative blocks? This is a tough one. Nothing blocks my creativity more than clutter. If my house or studio is disorganized, it really weighs me down. There have been many times where my desk is so full of miscellaneous papers, bills, random items that have just started to pile up that I almost completely shut down. I have to stop what I'm doing, take everything off my desk and start fresh. This goes for any project I'm working on. Even if my deadline is looming, usually the best thing I can do for myself is take a break, tidy up, and give myself room to breathe. Tell me about one of your pieces? Right now I'm working on a new series of animal themed prints. They're smaller two color prints and aren't quite as loose as my larger prints. For me, trying to make something two colors instead of five or six colors is much more of a challenge. They also have a bit of a geometric edge to them - repeating triangles and circles. As I was coming up with the designs, I kept having memories of these two wall hangings that were in my grandparent's house. They were in the room we used to sleep in - when I was 6 years old - and I remember always staring at them before falling asleep. I can barely remember what they looked like but can recall one was a rabbit. They were fabric stretched over a frame - simple and bold (very Scandinavian/Marimekko) and they had a very strong dot pattern on the animals. This is a really strange fuzzy memory, but those images were definitely burned in my brain. These new prints have really enabled me to start to credit where my inspirations actually come from. What is your favorite time of day?Dusk. It's quiet. The baby is asleep and Jose is home. What color best describes you?It's sort of this soft, almost murky blue green. I'm not sure exactly why, it's just the color I'm drawn to. It pops up in my prints all the time. What's the best piece of advice youve ever received? The advice that comes to mind would be from my husband Jose, who always comes up with some very helpful insights and reminders for me. "Many people do a lot more with a lot less." What is your advice for young artists?Never hesitate to convey appreciation of someone else's work. And learn the art of saying "no" - just because opportunities involving your art come your way, doesn't mean they will all be beneficial.If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?Florence, Italy If you could buy one piece of art (no matter the cost or availability), what would it be?A George Nakashima Conoid Bench. Corson Building Brunch must not be missed. Situated in a renovated historic house in Georgetown, Seattle, Chef Matthew Dillon grows his own greens and has a beehive and chicken coup in the yard. Where to find it: Pikes Place Fish Market, Downtown: Ship it home Rays Boat House, Ballard: Head in for Happy HourPike Street Fish Fry, Capitol Hill: Battered and fried all to your hipster likingTop 3 best parks in Seattle 1. Cal Anderson, Capitol Hill: Once an above ground reservoir, the recently renovated park now features a large water feature surrounded by lush green lawns. Tip: Come here to check out the locals.2. Olympic Sculpture Park, Belltown: Owned and run by the Seattle Art Museum, the OSP has incredible views and is the perfect place to watch the trains roll by as the sun sets over the Puget Sound. Discovery Park, Magnolia: Venture out on the 2.8 mile loop that takes you through open meadows, along a bluff on the Puget Sound and along the waterfront. It feels like youre completely out of the city, but really just a short drive.Top 5 places for the tourist "in disguise" There is so much to love about Seattle, but its often the details that make a city. These places are oh-so subtly Seattle to me.Big Picture: one of the only spots in Seattle where you can have a cocktail with your movie. Tip: Get there a little early and grab a bucket of their champagne popcorn and a martini.Burlesque Behind the Pink Door: I love it for the best burlesque productions in the city, located in Post Alley near the market. Warning!: This is not for the faint of heart, youll be disturbed, amazed and laughing the whole time. Tip: Order the lasagna and a carafe of the house red (Saturday night show starts at 9pm. Tip: Renting a bike on the waterfront is really the best route for visitors.Travel tip for people going to Seattle1. Pack in layers. You never know what youre going to get weather-wise, so its good to have outfits that work at various temperatures. 2.Second: Try to find an apartment to rent (airbnb.com or vrbo.com). Most of the hotels are located in high tourist areas downtown or in less central areas. If I had to choose, I'd pick a one bedroom apt in Capitol Hill, Eastlake or South Lake Union.What are people wearing in Seattle? You'll find that Seattle takes all kinds when it comes to fashion. Casual, not lazy is a good way to classify it. Youll find a lot of vintage inspired ensembles (mid-calf pencil skirts, silk tanks, biker jacket and chunky heels) alongside classic northwest (dark denim, crisp t-shirts, leather boots and plaid button ups). Tip: If you need some inspiration, check out It's My Darlin - Seattle Street Style.Do they really throw fish at you at the fish market? They actually throw the fish to each other, but watch out, the crazy-looking monkfish might spit water at you! The team is super friendly and most are easy on the eyes. Tip: If you dont have the facilities to cook while youre visiting, I recommend packing & shipping something to bring back.
