Field trip mom, reporting for duty
I recently chaperoned my kid's 5th grade field trip to the Star of India here in San Diego, and it reminded me how much a good outfit and a well-packed backpack can make or break the day. You're on your feet for hours, herding a group of kids, climbing on and off a historic ship, and keeping track of everyone's lunch. Comfort wins, but I still want to feel put together.
Every school does it a little differently, and what you wear will depend on where you're headed. A museum day looks different from a farm, a beach cleanup, or a day on the water. But in my experience, a few things are always true: we're usually put in charge of a small group of students, we carry their lunches, and we need our hands free. That's why I always wear a backpack.
Here's exactly what I wore and everything I packed, so you can copy it for your next field trip.
What I wore: my field trip mom uniform
My go-to formula is simple: jeans or workout pants, tennis shoes, a t-shirt, a light jacket with a hood in case of rain, a fanny pack, a hat, and a backpack. For the Star of India, I went with a brown-and-denim palette (and a little Padres pride, because San Diego). Shop the full look on ShopMy.
- The hat: San Diego Padres New Era 9SEVENTY in brown. Keeps the sun off my face on deck and hides a no-time-for-hair morning.
- The tee: Maeve Caitlin Cotton Boxy Tee. Soft, boxy, and the rolled sleeve looks a little more polished than a basic tee. The camel color pairs with everything brown.
- The jeans: PAIGE Anessa High Rise Wide Leg Jeans. Wide leg means I can crouch, climb ladders, and sit on the floor with the kids without anything pulling.
- The jacket: lululemon Always Effortless Jacket. Lightweight, packable, and it has a hood. San Diego mornings near the water start cool and windy, so this was perfect.
- The shoes: white leather sneakers. Comfortable enough for a full day of walking, and they go with any outfit.
- The fanny pack: Gucci GG belt bag. Phone, keys, cards, and lip balm stay on me so I'm not digging through my backpack every time I need something.
- The backpack. Non-negotiable. More on what goes inside below.
If jeans aren't your thing, swap in workout pants or joggers. Same idea: something you can move in all day.
What's in my field trip backpack
When you're responsible for a group of kids, you become the snack bar, the first aid station, and the sunscreen dispenser. These are the essentials I pack every time. Shop my Field Trip Must Haves list on Amazon.
The backpack itself
Pick one with a padded back and enough room for several lunches. These are the ones on my list:
- Herschel Nova Backpack – a classic shape that holds a lot
- Himawari Travel Backpack – lots of pockets plus a USB charging port
- ESVAN Corduroy Backpack – lightweight and cute, fits a 17" laptop
Keeping lunches cold
If you're carrying your group's lunches, a freezable bag saves you from warm yogurt and sad sandwiches.
- PackIt Freezable Classic Lunch Box (Blue Sky or Black) – built-in ice packs, collapses flat after lunch
- PackIt Freezable Snack Box – smaller, perfect for fruit and cheese
- Cerbonny Small Cooler Bag – freezable mini cooler with a built-in ice pack
First aid
Scraped knees happen, especially on a ship with ladders and narrow walkways.
- BAND-AID Travel Ready Portable First Aid Kit – 80 pieces, small enough for any backpack
- EVERLIT CARE Mini First Aid Kit 10 Pack – individual pouches, great to split among chaperones
- KeepGoing Travel First Aid Kit for Kids – 130 pieces, latex-free bandages
Sun protection
Even on a cloudy San Diego morning, the sun on the water is strong.
- Sun Bum Kids SPF 50 Clear Face Stick – quick and mess-free for little faces
- Sun Bum Kids SPF 50 Body Spray – for reapplying on a group fast
- Sun Bum Original SPF 30 Body Spray – for me
Clean hands
Kids touch everything. Lunch usually happens far from a sink.
- Touchland Hand Sanitizer Spray Trio – hydrating and smells good
- ALŌH Hand Sanitizer Wipes – alcohol-free with aloe, gentle on kids' hands
Snacks (for the kids and for you)
I always bring a few extras. Someone forgets a snack, or someone's lunch doesn't get eaten. Individually bagged snacks are easiest to hand out.
- Annie's Organic Cheddar Bunnies pouches
- SkinnyPop individual popcorn bags
- Stacy's Pita Chips, Sea Salt
- Boulder Canyon Avocado Oil Sea Salt Chips
- Mott's Assorted Fruit Snacks
Always check with your teacher about allergies before sharing snacks with the group.
Don't forget
- A full water bottle
- A phone charger or small power bank
- A printed list of your group's names and the teacher's phone number
- A few gallon zip bags for wet or dirty items
Adjust for where you're going
The uniform stays the same; the details change with the destination.
